DIG2109: Retouching

Objective:
Step 1:
Open the provided file Clone_Heal1.tif found in the Dig2109c sulley Project/Assignment info folder
Nondestructively clean up all scratches, damage and peeling paint from the sign. Remember keep it clean but retain the texture.
Step 2:
Non-Destructively change the color of BOTH the background of the sign and the word “Sunnyvale” to the colors of your choice. Make sure the colors “go together”.

DIG2109: Colorizing

We were given this black and white photograph and were told to non-destructively colorize it using layer masks. I've always wanted to learn how to do this and I am so excited I finally learned!!

Objective:
You will be colorizing the provided “Bird Lady” image using adjustment layers and masks in Photoshop. You will be using the multi-layer masking methods
discussed in lecture and lab. Remember to be aware of your color choices and make the final images as photo realistic as possible.

Requirements:
• Utilize adjustment layers and layer masks to colorize the image
Make sure your file is in CMYK format, not RGB
Keep your editing in a non-destructive manner by using quick masks and layer masks
Drop in the Ex2 Folder in the Drop Box
Must use start file provided
Colorize using layer mask and curve/fill methods discussed in class

Type and Design: Assignment #2

Found Type (publication layout)

For this assignment, I created my very own multi- page, cohesively themed
layout filled with personal photos taken of various forms of typography. Remembering the importance of layout from Assignment #1, I created this "Found Type Book."
The photo on the cover was taken a few summers ago in Spain. I'm really proud of this book, considering how much I struggled with learning how to use the programs and all the time that I put into it. The feed-back from critique was very positive and I'm glad my classmates found it successful. I hope to improve as the weeks go by! I've finally completed all my technical drawing and design classes and am now excited to be learning so much with computers!

Objective:
To explore, discover and photograph everyday typography. You will be
photographing various styles of type both industrial and abstract. Once photographed,
you will be using Adobe InDesign to create a fully designed multi- page digital book
displaying your findings. Your book will contain both imagery and text snippets
describing the photographs you have taken.

Type and Design

A new semester calls for new blog posts!
This was our first assignment for GRA3202 (Type and Design). We had to choose 3 magazine/newspaper articles with different typographical layouts and dissect the designs into simple
rectangles and shapes.
I used Photoshop and placed the original article on the left, and the "dissected" version on the right.

Objective:
To understand the principles of layout
design through the reverse engineering
of current graphic design. Using simple
shapes you will create a visual layout to
its purest form. Your final layout should
only contain black and white shapes.

Classwork

Here are two drawings from class last week.

1. In this first one, the model was sitting on a stool on top of a table. My professor said I was spending too much time focusing on the model and should be measuring the table more accurately, but lately I've been having more fun just observing and drawing rather than getting stuck on measuring. I like the line quality I've been starting to use.

2. In this one, there were two models: one standing (male) and one sitting (female). I concentrated more on the male model. During this class we started doing what is called "lighting drawings" (done with the orange chalk). They are simply quick gesture drawings starting off with a "round-about" in the hips and quickly showing the angles in the weight-bearing leg. The only thing I measured was the width in relationship to the height. You can see how much the male model shifted in my drawing (which is something that my professors look for).

Drawing II: Homework studies

These are the homework drawings for the first half of the semester.

1. My professor chose this one as the most successful...

2. I had fun doing this one! It is a 7 hour-long drawing. My professors always say that you can tell how much a person has really payed attention to what they're drawing by looking at the spine.

3. The perspective on this one was VERY challenging! The skeleton is leaning forward and I was looking through its ribcage.

4. I had the most fun with this next one. However, it wasn't chosen as one of my best. I assume it is because it looks too graphic, and it moves away from the basic contour and precise measuring that my professors were looking for. For the first time though, I used white chalk and a white pen with a thin tip.

Just to show improvement, below is my first skull and ribcage drawing of the semester.
  • Notice how narrow and small the ribcage is in comparison to the skull.
  • The line quality is very uniform and boring.
  • The drawing does not "breathe."
  • It is very two-dimensional)
